Personal Life

Shahrukh Khan or Shah Rukh Khan or SRK was born in New Delhi, India on November 2, 1965 from a middle class Muslim family. SKR is known to be a direct descendant of an ethnic Pathan from Afghanistan and Pakistan. His father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist of present-day Pakistan and a thriving entrepreneur. His mother, Lateef Fatima is a daughter of a government engineer and also from a well-off family. His parents married in 1959 and resided in New Delhi.

Even at a young age, SKR has shown signs of interest in the acting. He is an active student and managed to achieve awards from the school St Columbia’s School. He was also into sports but was regarded best when it comes to imitating Bollywood actors during his younger days. He went to pursue his degree in Economics from 1985 to 1988 but kept in touch with his acting side through Delhi’s Theatre Action Group or TAG with the help of theatre director Barry John.

Instead of continuing his master’s degree, he pursued his acting career and went to National School of Drama. His father died from cancer in 1981 and his mother from diabetes in 1991. He was left to care for his depressed older sister who continues to live with him to this day. He married his wife, Gauri Chibber, on October 25, 1991 under a traditional Hindu ceremony. Though he is a Muslim, he respects his wife’s religion and his three children, Aryan (19 y.o.), Suhana (16 y.o.) and AbRam (3 y.o.), practice both religion.

Acting Career

Although SKR started acting at a young age, he did not pursue it seriously until after he finished his degree. Like most people in the industry, there are certain points in SKR’s career that can be noted. Here are a few highlights in his acting and film production career.

  • The Television Debut

Though SKR started his television career in 1988 for Dil Dariya, he did not officially debut as a television actor until 1989 in the series Fauji. This series where he played the lead role led to other television stints and soon became a household name in the television industry. Though he is handsome, talented and often compared to Dilip Kumar, SKR stayed a television actor until 1991.

  • The Film Debut

SKR’s career path turned to film acting in April 1991 after his mother died from diabetes. He moved to Mumbai and got his shot in Bollywood with four films to start with. His film debut was the movie Deewana which was released in 1992. He portrayed a lot of energy in most of his initial film characters and even caught the attention of critics and the media.

  • The Controversial Anti-Hero

From 1993 to 1994, SKR portrayed darker, more villainous characters in films. This gave way to his flexibility in roles as well as his effective delivery of the characters he portrayed. During this period of time, he also went ahead with nude scenes for one of his films, which was censored by the Central Board of Film Certification.

  • On the Romantic Side

After the dark side, SKR also had roles in romantic comedies, further establishing his flexibility. The comedy drama film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa gave way to a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance in 1994 and it is this role that he is most proud of. The movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge established his name as a “romantic hero”. The movie was the highest earning film during the year, with over US$18 million gross worldwide.

  • The Career Challenges and Resurgence

In 1999 until 2003, SKR found himself in bouts of disappointment. Although his films were being lauded internationally, the films were not welcomed as warmly in India. This did not dampen SKR’s spirit and he continued making films. It was in 2004 when he was able to rekindle his path in Bollywood, with his films turning up as top grossers.

My Name is Khan and More

My Name is Khan is one of the best, if not the best film SKR has brought to Bollywood. Over the years, he has become an actor, a producer, a businessman and an all-out performer. In his years as an actor, he has gained the trust of viewers and entrusted the name “King of Bollywood”- and it’s no wonder why.
