Early Life

He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya in Haridwar. He continued his career as a Chemist in Vadodara when he decides to change his field. He went to Delhi where he visited to watch a play one day. That play lured him into the field of acting. He enrolled himself in the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi from where he secured the degree for acting.

Acting Career

After graduating from NSD in 2004, he moved to Mumbai to try his luck in Bollywood. That was the worst year of his struggle when he did not have the money to even pay his rent. He has to share the room of an NSD senior while he cooks meals for him in return.

After marking his entry into Bollywood with Sarfarosh, he continued to get small significant roles in Shool (role of a waiter), Jungle (role of a messenger) and Munnabhai MBBS (role of a pickpocketer). He even tried his luck at daily TV soaps but did not achieve much success. He also did a short film named The Bypass in 2003 where he shared the screen with the legendary Irrfan Khan.

It was his role in the movie Black Friday when he got recognized with the potential for more powerful roles. His first lead role was in Prashant Bhargava’s Patang in 2008, where he played the role of Chakku, a wedding singer. His role was critically applauded at the Tribeca Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. He received rave reviews by the renowned movie critic Roger Ebert. In 2009, he again appeared in a cameo role in the song Emotional Atyachar in the movie Dev D. he also did a prolonged, significant role in the movie New York.

Nawazuddin got his first recognition as an actor in 2010 for his role as a journalist in the movie, Peepli Live. In 2012, he provided another stellar performance in Kahaani after which he became a household name. He reached his peak of his acting career after his role of a gangster in Gangs of Wasseypur. However, according to him, his most realistic performance was in the movie Miss Lovely, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012.

He also appeared in a supportive role in Aamir Khan’s movie Talash in 2012 which garnered him the Special Jury award at the National Film Festival and the Best actor in a supporting role at the Asian Film Awards, Screen Awards, and Zee Cine Awards. He continued his prime form in 2013 when he came up with the sequel to Gangs of Wasseypur, Aatma, and Patang. He even tried negative roles in the movie Kick, Badlapur and Raman Raghav 2.0 where he did not disappoint his audiences.

In 2015, he got his first solo lead role in Manjhi-the mountain man. He also did Bajrangi Bhaijaan in that year. He was awarded the best actor for the movie Haramkhor at the Indian Film Festival at New York.

Awards and Recognition

2012 proved to be a productive year for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He got a series of awards for several movies in that year. Apart from the awards that he bagged for Talash, he also obtained the best supporting actor award and the favorite award for his role in Gangs of Wasseypur at Stardust Awards and Lions Gold Awards. He also got the best-supporting actor award for the movie, the Lunchbox at the Filmfares and Renault Star Guild Award. Additionally, he got the best actor in a comic role for Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the best actor in a negative role for Badlapur at the Zee Cine Awards in 2015.

Unknown Facts

There are several facts that are unknown about Nawazuddin. He was born in a place where there were no movie theaters. He had to go the nearest town about 45 kilometers away to watch a movie. Rather, he preferred to stand in front of the mirror and enact roles. In his entire early life, he saw around five films in total. He was married at a very young age even before he started his career. His first on-screen kiss with his co-star Niharika Singh is the first kiss in his life! His role model is Ashish Vidyarthi and his favorite role is the role of Prince Salim in the movie, Mughal-e-Azam. His monolog in the movie New York reflects the year-long struggle he did to pursue his career. Nawazuddin is a man of a few words, with a few friends and is planning to go for a sabbatical to recharge his batteries.
