Biography

Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar was born on June 22, 1974. He is the son of filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar. He had a sister named Vidhya, who died when she was still two years of age. Vidhya’s death reportedly dealt a massive blow to the once talkative and hyperactive Vijay.

The actor was educated at the Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Loyola College where he studied Visual Communications. Vijay eventually dropped out of college to pursue acting.

In 1999, Vijay married London-based Sangeetha Sornalingam. Sangeetha is said to be an avid fan of Vijay. The two met while Vijay was filming in Chennai. Vijay and Sangeetha have two children: son Sanjay and daughter Divya.

Career

Vijay initially started his career as a child actor, having appeared in several of his father’s movies, starting with “Vetri” in 1984. However, his first leading role came in 1992 when he starred in “Naalaiya Theerpu.”

It wasn’t until 1996 that Vijay rose to prominence. His breakout role was in the romantic film “Poove Unakkaga” in 1996. The film made Vijay a household name and ranked him as one of India’s top actors. As an actor, Vijay is known for excelling in various departments including dancing, singing, and performing his own stunts.

“Kadhalukku Mariyadhai” in 1997 earned Vijay his first acting award, which was the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. Throughout his illustrious acting career, Vijay has won 28 awards and has received 46 nominations.

Aside from being a renowned actor, Vijay is also a passionate philanthropist. He launched a social welfare organization called Vijay Makkal Iyakkam in July 26, 2009. The organization sprang into action when Cyclone Thane ravaged parts of India. Through his organization, the actor helped put up a relief camp and provided food rations to those affected.

Among Vijay’s advocacies include education for children. He appeared with fellow actors Suriya, Jyothika, and R. Madhavan in a brief commercial advocating against child poverty and labor. He has donated school supplies and computers to schools in poverty-stricken areas. He also encourages his official fan club to help people suffering from poverty.

In the movie industry, Vijay is known as the King of the Formula Film. Critics noted that most of his commercially successful films have the same formulaic elements.
